Iron and Ink
Shire of Ambergard
Ephrata, Washington
June 18-20, 2004
Iron and Ink is offered as a weekend retreat for the
Artisans of the Inland's Region of Central AnTir.
However, anyone and everyone who desires to join-in
and take part are most welcome.
Members of the Most Ancient and Noble Order of the
Laurel who reside in the Inlands Region are expressly
invited to attend and teach their preferred art and
to encourage their apprentices in the same. We would
like to request Members of the Order of the Jambe de
Lion and other Inlands Area Artisans also to please
consider teaching a favorite art form at this event.
Dame Tamlyn Sable Sable, Kingdom Scribe is handling
the arrangement of class scheduling and those wishing
to offer a class should contact her by e-mail at
or by phone at (425) 880-6209.
Schedule:
The Site opens at noon on Friday, June 18th - but you
can make arrangements with the Autocrat if you really
want to come earlier than that. Friday will mainly
consist of site set-up and preparation and individual
camp set-up. The Site closes sometime in the
afternoon or evening on Sunday, June 20th - after
everyone has comfortably packed up and departed - but
you can make arrangements with the Autocrat if you
really want to stay longer than that.
Saturday morning, breakfast snacks, coffee, tea and
juice will be provided to get things fired up and
classes should begin around 9:00 or 10:00 a.m.
Classes:
Class descriptions and the schedule are now available
(off-site).
Cystenin and Mishka are each offering a one-on-one
mentoring class, by request on the topic you want.
For those interested, we are hoping to have an
introductory lesson on Barony and Shire obligations
for the 40-Year Celebration Doomsday Book and a class
on Civic Armory - Heraldic Achievement for Branches
Modern clothing is acceptable in all classes and for
some may be preferable.
Expect some classes to require lab fees to cover
costs and come prepared bringing change (small
bills).
Meetings:
An Inlands Regional Laurel Meeting is planned and it
would be nice to also have a "gathering for
introductions" of the Inland's Jambes over tea or
some such. More information will be forthcoming as
plans and scheduling firm up.
Food:
A Potluck Feast is planned for Saturday evening. If
you wish to attend the feast, please plan to come to
the table dressed in Period Attire. The main meat
dish will be provided by Ambergard's Culinary Guild.
As it is "potluck," you will need to please also
bring a dish to feed 8 - 10 adults. Saturday Morning,
breakfast snacks and drinks will be provided. Other
meals are your own responsibility. The drive-in
restaurant next door is not open on the weekends, but
there are a number of others in town who are i.e.,
Subway, McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Maker and DK's
and we also have a Safeway and aWal-Mart Super Center
for purchasing groceries and/or fresh produce. We
have a pretty large barbeque if you need to use it.
Site Information and Accommodations:
The event will be held at Elgar and Bronwen's private
residence in the Shire of Ambergard. The property is
in the town of Ephrata and a bit less than an acre in
size. Approximately 40% of the property is a shaded
and manicured lawn and the rest mostly graveled with
a small portion of asphalt driveway. Extra parking is
available at the drive-in Restaurant next door (by
permission of the owner) and during the day, on the
street frontage. There are two outbuildings; one set
up as a woodworking shop, the other is a large
three-car garage with concrete floor that can be used
by the metalworkers. Scribal classes and activities
will be held inside the residence, which is
air-conditioned and has two large and two small
lesson and work areas. There are three bathrooms with
showers inside. One or more portable handicap toilets
will be set up outside. Camping Space is limited but
definitely available. We would appreciate that you
RSVP your pavilion size - if you plan on
"over-nighting" - as good planning will help to
ensure that all are able to find a resting-place in
the shade. There is a public swimming venue in town.
Directions to get there will be provided in the site
handout. Bring your suits and towels (and sunscreen)
if you would like to take advantage of it. Portable
fire-pits are okay (please do not dig fire-pits into
the lawn). The outbuildings are lit for possible
night-time work. We have limited outdoor lighting but
I expect that we will all prefer the light of
portable torches - so bring them if you like. There
are a number of water spigots available on the
property with water coming from the city well. We
will try to keep hose attached to some for fire
safety and others open for drawing water.
Site Fees:
The Non-Member Surcharge is in effect for this event.
The site fee for Iron and Ink for Blue Card Carrying
SCA Members is $4.00 and your Potluck contribution
(if you are staying for dinner). Please add another
$3.00 to that fee if you are not a card-carrying
member of the SCA. Remember that some classes may
require lab fees to cover the cost of materials.
Site Info:
Bronwyn and Elgar's Keep
701 Basin St NW
Ephrata, WA 98823
Directions to Site:
If you are coming East on I-90:Take Hwy 283 (Exit
151) and drive almost all the way through Ephrata -
it's about 22 miles. First, Hwy 283 becomes Hwy 28 at
Naylordale Junction then it becomes Basin Street
(once you are in Ephrata). Turn left on 6th AVE NW,
and then make an almost immediate right turn into the
alley-way behind Barb and Ed's Drive-In. Drive
through the gate at the end of the alley into our
backyard parking lot.
If you are coming West on I-90: Take Hwy 17 (Exit
179) and do not turn off this road until you hit
"Basin Street" in Ephrata (Please note: about 5 miles
before you hit Ephrata, Hwy 17 becomes Hwy 282. You
want to be on Hwy 282 because Hwy 17 actually veers
off to the right at the Y - towards Soap Lake - DON'T
GO THAT WAY.) Anyway, when you hit Basin Street in
Ephrata, you will be at a streetlight where you must
make either a right or left turn. Please turn right
onto Basin Street. Drive almost all the way through
town (heading North) and make a left turn on 6th AVE
NW and then make an almost immediate right turn into
the alley-way behind Barb and Ed's Drive-In. Drive
through the gate at the end of the alley into our
backyard parking lot.
If you are coming West out of Spokane on Hwy 2: You
need to turn onto Hwy 28 at Davenport. Highway 28
becomes Basin Street as you enter Ephrata. Once in
Ephrata, turn right on 6th AVE NW, immediately after
Barb and Ed's Drive-In. Then, make an almost
immediate right turn into the alley-way behind Barb
and Ed's Drive-In. Drive through the gate at the end
of the alley into our backyard parking lot.
If you are coming South on Hwy 17: Turn right onto
Hwy 28 right after you get through Soap Lake (it's
like an on-ramp) and follow the directions listed
above for Hwy 28.
